Hallington, Newcastle on Tyne (on headed notepaper for The Master's Lodge, Trinity College, Cambridge). - Thanks Bob for writing; returns Mr Taylor's letter and 'will leave the matter' [see 14/192] in Bob's hands. They are at Hallington till 20 August, then go to the Lakes for a few days before returning to Cambridge; letters to the Lodge will always be forwarded. Likes the result of the [general] election, though 'of course things may turn out badly yet as they often do': does not see how a 'purely Conservative' government could 'have turned out well' as things are, and though he 'agree[s] with the Liberals well enough' he fears that if they had 'held the balance' there would have been a long delay in getting a government, which then would have been 'a weak one - very fatal in the present state of the world'. The Labour leaders have had real experience in government, which they 'so sorely lacked' before 1940; hopes they will nationalize the mines. Hopes to see Bob in Cambridge next term.
