My dear Greg,

Our Publicity man being away, I signed on Saturday a formal letter to you about your advance copy, but I should like to say how pleased we are to produce a book of this serene and permanent kind in war-time when so much that is written is written for the moment. It is a splendid performance, and I hope you will not find that we have done our part badly in war-time. The binding cloth has lost some of the depth of colour which I used to like, but it is the best of its kind we can get nowadays when matching isn’t easy.

I hope you will still find more books to write. A great age of Shakespeare scholarship is coming to an end, and we ought to have its record.
