Archival history

These items came into the Library with other books and papers of Greg’s some time between 1959, when Greg died, and 1969, when an Inventory of the accession was made. (The Inventory is not dated, but the part of it relating to printed material is inserted among records for the year 1969 in the register of donations to the Library (Add. MS. a. 161A, ff. 36a–c).) Some of the printed books were not added to the Library. Six manuscript volumes were catalogued as Add. MS. c. 219–24; the present collection contains the rest of the manuscript material, including letters and papers removed from the printed items. For a detailed account of the whole accession see the PDF file under ‘Uploaded finding aid’.

System of arrangement

The papers and volumes were put into four archival boxes, and the contents of each were numbered in the order in which they lay, the letters having previously been arranged in alphabetical order by correspondent. The classes 1–4 each represent the contents of one of these boxes.
