Writing from the train between Tanjore and Madura. - Sends this 'ill-written scrawl' as he would not catch this mail due to travelling; outlines their current travel plans; his mother had better write her next letter to Hong Kong, where they will be around the beginning of March, and the next to Shanghai. Doubts he will be able to go to Japan; expects he will start the journey home from Pekin [Beijing] in the middle of April. It is not too hot in southern India, and they are having quite a good time, but travel by rail is 'very uncomfortable and crowded'. Is 'not exactly tired of India', but 'tired of travelling about in it'. Southern India 'certainly more attractive' than the north in terms of appearance. Enjoyed their days in camp with Mr Bedford [Collector of Salem] 'very much.
