[On headed notepaper for 8 Grosvenor Crescent, S.W.:]- Thanks his mother for her letter, the hamper, and the paper. Is pleased that he can 'give a better account' of himself for the last ten or twelve days: they will not be 'placed' until next Sunday, but he thinks he has 'satisfied all [his] masters'. They have 'only had two schools in French' but he thinks he did well; it will be difficult to judge from next month's report how well he has done. Has been chosen to construe in class 'a great deal', and 'got through creditably each time'. Still some time left, as there are 'no trials', so he will have had a 'whole fortnight' to work. Hopes this will be the 'last time' he 'shall cause trouble like this'.
Sports have been going on for a while, and he greatly enjoys them; he won his house mile, and would likely have won or come second in the quarter mile race if he had not 'got giddy and fallen over about 30 yards from the end'. He scratched himself, but not badly. May possibly win some other sports, but cannot tell yet.
Charlie seems very well; Robert 'hopes there is nothing the matter with him'; he is 'doing very well in the sports'.
Robert is sorry to hear about the 'snow in Northumberland', and hopes it will not do 'much harm'; there is an inch of snow here today. Must work 'really hard' at the hexameters in the holiday. Is 'so glad' to hear about Georgie: it is 'very nice to have got it' [Bowen's school prize?]; thinks Georgie 'would be nearly certain to get a [Harrow] scholarship'; Mr Arnold has written Robert a 'very nice letter'.
