Hôtel & Pensione Palumbo, Ravello, presso Amalfi:- Is 'very glad that George is coming out here'; hopes to be 'able to go on with him to Sicily for a bit'; they had better go on at once if so, 'while the almonds are still out' in Sicily, rather than stay at Ravello, but he will see what George thinks. Has had 'beastly weather' almost his whole stay, 'or rather no continuous good weather like last year', but it is still very nice and suits him well. The other guests at the hotel have been 'very stupid people this time, not like last year', so he will be relieved when George comes.
Has got on well with his play, though has just discovered to his 'disgust' that he will need five acts not four, 'which will mean at least two month's more work'. Is glad his father's book [The American Revolution] 'has been so well received and reviewed': it is 'a good sign that the Saturday Review has treated him with respect, as it is often inclined to go against the general opinion in order to be independent' yet 'its criticisms are really better and more serious than most'. Sorry she has had 'so bad a January at Welcombe', and hopes February will be better.
Has little to say, so will copy out 'a silly little thing' he wrote the other day; she 'must imagine a sort of guardian puck or Robin Goodfellow in a lady's chamber' [Fairy Song, published in Polyphemus & Other Poems, 1901]. Poem and letter are incomplete.
