Bessie is reading aloud a translation of Herodotus, 'not a bad one, in the Loeb Classics'; since she does not know Greek she has not read it before, 'a pleasure long deferred'. They are just reaching the 'story of the master thief in book two, which might come out of the Arabian Nights'.
