Item 75 - Letter from Richard Francis Burton to Richard Monckton Milnes, Lord Houghton

After Lord Houghton’s death in 1885 his library passed firstly to his son the 1st Marquess of Crewe, then to Peggy, Marchioness of Crewe, and eventually to Lord Crewe’s daughter the Duchess of Roxburghe.

The book containing this letter forms part of the bequest of Mary Innes-Ker, Duchess of Roxburghe, 2014.

On embossed notepaper of East India United Service Club. - Has 'found the original copy [of the omitted appendix 4, two pages of which appear in this book in print form, the rest in manuscript by an unknown hand], also a slip from Longman's'. Milnes can now judge if he thinks it interesting, as Burton does. Will return from Germany in about a month and get Milnes' opinion on reprinting it.
