      TRANSCRIPT:

      Sunday evening July 4th 1915.

      My darling I am absolutely done by the heat its been tremendous all day, rather delicious too except now when I think it would be fun to go to sleep and my bedroom is like a furnace.

      But this afternoon we had quite a good picnic quite close to where you & I went and you got pleurisy. Our party was the 3 other amateurs, Hunter (now an indispensable figure in all our revels) and me. He and I & one of the others had a really perfect bathe and then tea in damp bathing dresses to keep us cool, lying in burning sand. My colour is dreadful in consequence.

      My poisoned thumb is not being a great success, I mean its not sufficiently poisoned to make an excuse for leaving, so I suppose I shall have to make up my mind to tell her the truth, a thing I am always most reluctant to do. She’s such a bore that I feel I cant face anything but the most superficial conversation with her. {1}

      I couldnt finish last night, now I’ve just got your letter of Saturday with its enclosure to the P.M which I think on the whole very good, tho’ it certainly presents a fairly gloomy picture. Is he going to France again?

      I’ve had a telegram from Vizee this morning announcing her engagement.

      In case I only come back Sunday wouldnt it be best if I came direct to London, I mean by train so as to be able to get through a little business on Sunday. I am sorry you are feeling ill.

      Would you like to send me £5 in one or several notes? I’ve exhausted my supply and shall want some to get home on.

      I cant write as you see.

      Love
      V.
