Comments on Sidgwick's own attitude to Socrates and ethics. Explanation of Probabilism; role of the latter in the philosophies of the Jesuits and Ultramontaines [who adhered to its principles], and of the centralised orders of Benedictines, Oratorians and Dominicans [who were against it].
