Writes to express his sympathy with Nora 'in the irreparable misfortune which has befallen' her. States that he has known Henry Sidgwick for forty years, and claims that in the latter part of that time he considered him to be 'the first man in Cambridge'. Adds that the whole university shares in her grief. Remarks that it is a source of consolation to think that her 'numerous occupations will, in course of time be a relief from [her] sorrow', although she will be 'deprived of the sympathy and encouragement' of Henry in her work. Concludes with his conviction that Nora and Henry may be reunited 'in a better world'.
