      Probably inspired by the croquet game in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Sarah LeFanu, in her biography of Macaulay, suggests the sketch implies that it was Miss Lees who was responsible for her applying for an aegrotat rather than sitting her final examinations at Oxford.
