States that he is glad to hear that his operation has been successful, but regrets that he must give up academic life, a move he describes as 'a disaster to Cambridge.' Wishes to express his sympathy with Nora 'under so great a blow'. States that 'it is not those who have of late years found themselves voting often against the Professor that admire and respect him the least: it is not they who will look coolly on his resignation.' Trusts that he will 'do a good bit of work in retirement.'
